Golly

Height
16.1hh
Sex
Gelding
Colour
Flea Bitten Grey
Breed
Hanoverian x TB
Age
23
Owner
Mary Wanless
History
Golly came to Overdale, on loan to Karin, in 2007 and he was subsequently bought by Mary. Golly is still regularly ridden by Karin, who has competed with him in local unaffiliated dressage competitions at Novice level.
Outlook
Golly has a very polite and gentle way of taking his riders, and learning to control the speed of his legs is the first thing he has to teach most of them. In the stable and field he is a quiet gentleman, a great companion for any new arrivals.

Amber (Thingamy)

Height
16.2hh
Sex
Mare
Colour
Bay
Breed
Thoroughbred x Irish Draught
Age
22
Owner
Claire Ackermann
History
Owned by Claire for 10+ years. A riding and dressage horse, she has also spent some time at Shuttleworth College. Amber came to Overdale on loan in September 2014.
Outlook
Amber is generally very gentle and amenable, although she does have her moments. She has been cold-backed at times, so it is necessary to be gentle with her when mounting; it seems the worst she does is leave the mounting block at a brisk walk. Amber is a great teacher, the rider needs to be very definite about what they want to do, but she is very capable of working in an outline.

Rhuben

Height
17hh
Sex
Gelding
Colour
Bay
Breed
Shire x Hackney
Age
9
Owner
Mary Wanless
History
Came from a private owner, who mostly hacked him, in April 2015.
Outlook
Rhuben has two personas; a soggy armchair, who will plod and wobble somewhat, and a sprightly dressage pony! He is very responsive to a rider's organisation and in particular their narrowness and use of boards (for those who know what they are). In many respects he is quite 'green and unblanced', but has already grown in strength.

Shanti

Height
16hh
Sex
Mare
Colour
Bay
Breed
Welsh x TB
Age
15
Owner
Mary Wanless
History
Shanti had been in private ownership, with the same owner since before she was backed. She had done a variety of hacking and riding club activities. She came to OEC in May 2015.
Outlook
She is generally forward going and also very responsive to each riders' organisation, being particularly sensitive to contact through the rein, hollowing if she feels she is held in, so the rider needs to learn to control the tempo through their body.

Portfolio (Porto)

Height
14.1hh
Sex
Gelding
Colour
Skewbald
Breed
Unknown
Age
7
Owner
Amanda Langton
History
Bred by the owner and backed shortly before coming to Overdale in August 2015.
Outlook
Young, green, forward going and very bright, Porto is quick to learn new things, whether they be the way you want him to go, or that the rider does not keep their thighs on, and/or pulls on the inside rein and that means he can go out through his shoulder in the opposite direction to that desired by the rider. A solid compact build he feels much bigger from on board than he looks from the ground.

Bonnie

Bonnie (Eastern Sheer Magic)

Height
15hh
Sex
Mare
Colour
Bay
Breed
50% Arab
Age
25
Owner
Brittany Teague
History
Has been with Brittany for 10+ years. Jumped, hunted, team chased, hacked; has generally lived life in the fast lane. Came to Overdale on loan in April 2014.
Outlook
Can be a little grumpy in the stable. Under saddle she is now learning to work in an outline, up through her back, rather than hollow. Her ability to do this has come as a bit of a shock to her. If the rider pulls on the rein, or is disorganised, then Bonnie will revert to her fast and fighting hollow pattern. The more organised the rider can get, then the more organised and calmer Bonnie becomes. Consequently she is not a novice ride, but is an interesting challenge for the more experienced lightweight riders.

Chico

Height
13.2hh
Sex
Gelding
Colour
Chestnut
Breed
New Forest
Age
15
Owner
Karin Major
History
Chico is lucky to be with us at all. At the age of 6 months (or possibly younger), he was one of a lorry load of 96 ponies heading for a meat man, when some kind soul bought the lot to save them. Chico subsequently found his way to a home near Karin with another Mare and her foal from the same lorry load. We don't know when he was separated from his dam. Chico and the other foal, Kaiser, managed to escape from their field on a number of occasions and several times were found by Karin and returned to their field by her. Their owner came to say thanks and subsequently asked Karin to do some handling with them, firstly just catching them, teaching them to load and then caring for them whilst she was away on holiday. On her return the owner had decided to sell them, so Karin bought Chico and her friend Jackie bought Kaiser, they were then 2yo. After Chico was backed, he was ridden by Karin for a while, then went out to a couple of loan homes to gain experience. He returned to Overdale in 2009 where he is now ridden by both experienced adults and children, in lessons and on courses.
Outlook
Chico is generally the boss of the ponies. He is very bright and forward going, needing only light aids, but can be tricky to steer. He just loves to jump, and is extremely nimble over fences.

Cherry

Height
12hh
Sex
Mare
Colour
Bay
Breed
Welsh Mountain
Age
26
Owner
The Epona Trust, Southampton
History
Cherry came from the Abergavenny sales where her story was similar to that of Merv. She then went to the Epona Trust when her rescuers family split up due to a divorce. Historically, the Welsh Mountain pony was the beast of all work for the hill farmer; tough enough to winter on the mountain where they could range over a large area (and the legend is that their prized 'teacup' noses are an adaptation for grazing the mountain grasses between the rocks and scree), and strong enough to carry a light adult. Enthusiasts will tell you that the Mountain ponies are the descendants of the best Welsh stock which were hidden in the mountains when Henry VIII made a law that all small ponies under 14 hands were to be killed (in order to ensure enough large animals were bred for war!). Though the size decreased, the ponies sense of its own importance did not and this is what makes them so good in the right hands, but lethal in the wrong hands. They were never meant to be childrens' ponies !!!
Outlook
Cherry is very sweet to handle. She is a great lead rein pony and is very safe for young riders to take their first steps off the lead rein. Although Cherry may have distinct ideas of her own about the direction those steps are taken in, the pace is safe.

Maggie Mae

Height
17.2hh
Sex
Mare
Colour
Bay
Breed
unknown / Hunter
Age
11
Owner
Karin Major
History
Lightly backed then turned away. Being brought on with a view to use in the school in due course. Settled in the OEC herd.
Outlook
Still something of a gangly teenager. Still growing and filling out. Learning to control and balance her body. She is a more challenging ride for the more experienced rider. There is a lot of her to organise. In no way unsafe, but can be a little excitable or unsure at times. Keen to show you what she knows and inclined to anticipate what is required next. Able to work in leg yield. Does not yet canter or jump in lessons.

unknown / Cob
Age
12
Owner
Mary Wanless
History
Came to OEC in September 2011 from a private home, initially on loan. Bought by Mary in April 2012.
Outlook
A keen ride, working well in walk and trot, including laterally. Does not yet canter or jump in lessons. Mostly ridden by Mary, but also used on courses for more advanced riders.

Jed

Height
15.2hh
Sex
Gelding
Colour
Brown (Dun)
Breed
Welsh Section D
Age
11
Owner
Karin Major
History
Acquired by Karin in 2008 as an unbacked 3 year old, Karin has brought Jed on from there. He went on his first fun ride and to his first dressage competition as a 4yo, coming 2nd in his first ever Intro test. As a 5yo he went out clear round jumping and local riding club dressage and combined training events, bringing rosettes home on each occasion. He hacks out alone and in company.
Outlook
Jed is very bright and loves to please, but can also be shy and wary of new things. He likes to test the boundaries every now and then and tests new handlers to see who takes who into the barn each morning. Used mostly on courses for advanced riders.

Sipko

Sipko

Height
16.2hh
Sex
Gelding
Colour
Bay
Breed
Dutch Warmblood
Age
17
Owner
Jayne Robbie
History
Owned by Jayne for 10+ years. Dressage horse, who has done a little eventing. Unfortunately Jayne (a former pupil of Karin) has some spinal injuries and has been unable to ride him for sometime, so Sipko has been with a number of professional/semi-professional riders. He came to Overdale, on loan to Karin, in July 2004. British Dressage Novice points.
Outlook
Sipko is a very lovable, self-assured, extravagant, big moving horse. He is mainly at Overdale to teach Karin how to ride better, although may be available for lessons for more advanced riders.
